Corepower Yoga 1 – Beginning Power Yoga

February 6 – 10:30AM

Instructor: Sheila O’Connor

The only Yoga I have really done before is Bikram. I have done a few yoga stretches with some girlfriends a morning after heavy drinking, but no real classes. I was super excited about taking my first Corepower class and get a nice relaxing workout, but this was subdued the moment I walked into the studio. Turns out, I went to high school with the instructor Sheila – whom I haven’t seen since high school. It’s not that I don’t like Sheila or anything, but yoga is quite an intimate experience and I just didn’t need the extra attention. To make matters worse, the mid-day class only had one other participant. So here I was in a vacant yoga studio with one middle-aged man, and one instructor I went to high school with. Safe to say my relaxation hour started off rocky.

As the class began Sheila started to ease my mind by the way she spoke to us. She made it very clear that it was about trying new things, not mastering the poses. I like the mindset she was putting me in and started to feel a bit calmer, but then we dived deep into the core of the class and once again I felt disconnected. I felt as though the movements were too quick and I never got the benefit of one before I was already moving on to the next. I was praying for class to end so I could go home and actually stretch.

It was great to try a new experience, but I do not see myself going back to Corepower anytime soon.
