Bikram Yoga River North

January 30 – 10:00AM

Instructor: Jennifer Saito

I love Bikram Yoga. There is something incredibly soothing about high-heat and long drawn out poses that allows me to disconnect from all the bullsh*t in life and just let go. However, this was the first Bikram class I felt uncomfortable in.

I haven’t gone to a Bikram class in over 6 months and decided to go for a nice relaxing day with my girlfriend, Audrey. Obviously, if you haven’t been in the heat in awhile it can be hard on the mind and body. So about 20 minutes into the class I started to feel a little overwhelmed and laid down in Shavasna to recollect myself, but the moment I laid my head on the mat the instructor called me out — “Taylor, would you please turn around and sit on your mat instead of laying down?” Of course the class was about 10 people so this made me feel extremely awkward and I quickly turned around. I have never been told to NOT lay in Shavasna! This was mind-blowing to me. Not only did she call me out and make me feel like I was getting in trouble at school, but now I couldn’t lay and quietly absorb the heat. I was forced to come face to face with my reflection in the mirror and watch as the sweat dripped from my nose. From that point on I was disengaged from class and couldn’t bring myself to get back into the groove. All I could think about was that I had to remain in this room for over an hour.

I was so bittered by this Bikram experience I have yet to take myself back for another class. I know I will get over it soon and be back in my loving relationship with Bikram, but you can guarantee I will not be signing up for classes with Jennifer again. Sorry Jen :/
